High School Student - Athlete's (Basketball, Soccer, & Baseball), & Potential Trip Leaders

The past two years we have taken a group of High School athletes to Mexico to run basketball camps and meet some basic needs of the children of San Jose del Cabo.  The trips were a great success in the past and is growing each year. Leaving Mexico last year, I felt something was left to be desired ; something more could be done.  This year, we will be expanding to Jaco, Costa Rica. We are looking for 10 - 12 student-athletes, young men and women, who play basketball. soccer, or baseball to join us this summer! Our anticipated trip dates are August 2nd - August 10th, 2017.

The opportunity to build relationships with 100 - 200 kids in Costa Rica has been made available to us:  The sports complex being opened for our use is larger than I could have imagined!  It carries 2 soccer fields, a large covered basketball court, with concessions area, a boxing ring, grand stands for viewing, and a vast surrounding area that will easily hold 300 folks!!  The plan prior to visiting Costa Rica was to expand into multiple sports (baseball and soccer) and once I saw the venue, I knew my decision to expand into other sports was the right one!!

This year, in 2017, we will be expanding the camp to offer:

 

• Basketball

• Soccer

• Baseball

• Boxing *** We are in discussions with a local Costa Rican who may run this class for us!

But, that is just the beginning of this exciting news!!!

 

We will also be meeting the humanitarian need of EDUCATION. During my time there, I learned that many kids are unable to afford the proper uniforms in order to attend school. Therefore, many are left on the streets and forced into prostitution as young as the age of 10. This educational need must be met and we are aiming to meet it through school uniform sponsorship. This August, our goal is to have a minimum of 10 children of Jaco, Costa Rica sponsored and registered for school!! Although my heart hopes for more!  We hope this will be the start of a new way of life for many of these kids. We are excited for this opportunity and hope many of you will join us for the journey!

 

Why are we doing all this?

 

As followers of Christ, we believe that we are called to love, serve, and meet the needs of others. Because of this, we feel led to meet humanitarian needs, such as education, all the while, using sport(s) as a common bridge to help build relationships and trust with the community of Jaco.  While we are there, we will be sharing our faith. (You do not need to be a Christian to participate on this trip).

 

There are added benefits to the student-athlete for participating on these trips beyond college resume-building. Trips of this focus help equip young athletes to see where their gifts and talents can be used in developing under privileged kids in other countries. They empower our youth to have a positive impact on communities outside of their own and many times our youth return impacted greater than the vast impact they had on the kids they were investing in during their time there!

 

We are looking for 10 - 12 student-athletes, young men and women, who play basketball. soccer, or baseball to join us this summer! We aim to make a difference in the lives of these kids and we hope you will join us plant roots that will have an eternal impact! 

 

The cost of the trip is $1,400. This all-inclusive cost includes airfare, meals, lodging in Costa Rica, and all camp meals, drinks, supplies and equipment needs. Trip participants will be responsible for about $40 in exit fees at the airport and any needed immunizations prior to the trip.

We will have 4 - 5 monthly meetings. As a team, we will have fundraising opportunities, including selling t-shirts, putting on basketballs camps and others to help raise funds. We also encourage team members to share about the trip with friends and family through prayer and financial support letters.

 

We are looking for energetic student-athletes, passionate leaders, and story tellers to join our team! Due to limited accommodations, we will only be able to take a select number of participants. You do not need to be affiliated with the Hurricanes to fill out an application form.

 

Additional athlete and parent meetings will give you opportunity to hear more about our goals and will give you opportunity to ask questions and give some feedback, additionally you may withdraw your application at a later time if you decided this is not for your athlete.
